The ceremony

The invitation for the citizenship ceremony stated that it will last close to four hours... what it didn't mention is that most of that time would be spent waiting. The actual ceremony lasts closer to 15 minutes. The poor American husband with his imported wife to my side was getting pretty exasperated. Why don't they have the courtesy to at least go to the microphone, apologize and explain what was the cause of the delay? was his question. Well.. I guess after waiting 12 or 20 years to become a citizen, four hours are not such a big deal to us... (yeap, we have to wait that much).

More than two thousand people took the oath that day, at that location. I know they have these ceremonies in this place at least once a month, and I've heard they have other locations in Houston where they host such ceremonies... and this is just one city (the fourth in size in the country, but nevertheless) that is a lot of people becoming citizens a year. This is really a country of immigrants.

The entrance to the ceremony was through a two way, one lane street. Traffic was awful. Several people were driving through the shoulder lane to advance... How dare... Weren't they going to become citizens of the United States? They should know better about civic behavior. They should have learnt by now.

That reminded me of the mainly immigrant neighborhood where I used to live for some years. The park was usually filthy and it made me sad to recognize how much we have to learn.

When I arrived to the venue, the parking lot was full... after several minutes of searching I finally parked in a "no parking" zone... so much for civic behavior :). At the end I was safe... no ticket issued.

The ceremony finally started. Mostly a conversation between the judge and a representative from the immigration office. Something like "Are you sure all these people deserve to become citizens of the United States?" and the immigration officer answers "Yes, I have revised their paperwork".

Then, the judge turns to "The People" and asks "If somebody has any doubts about being willing to bear arms for the United States or to renounce to previous allegiances, talk now or forever hold your peace" (well... something like that). After his question, everything was silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Of course.

After going through so much for so many years, sure somebody is going to say anything at this moment. But you wonder how many were crossing their fingers, or at least thinking I don't know if I will ever be willing to bear arms for anything or anyone.

He also asked if somebody wanted to do the pledge without the words "under God". I have learnt much about the logic of science and stopped believing in God a long time ago (that's topic for another blog), but in this situation of the pledge during my citizenship ceremony, why bother? The shorter the way, the better. 12 years had been long enough to trip myself with last minute beliefs minutia.

It seem the event was going to end without much emotion, but when they were singing the national anthem, right when they were talking about “the land of the free” a tear run through my face. I don’t know if it was for the things I had just renounced to, or for the new life I was embracing… probably for both… or maybe I’m just a softy.

Questions for interview.

The interview to review the N400 form, right after the citizenship test, and the final step for citizenship approval, only lasted 10 minutes.

I mean... if you know enough English to understand.

I tried to pretend the interview with my parents to see how would they do... and they're not ready yet. It's hard for an almost 80 years old person to learn this much English... especially when you can perfectly survive just with Spanish in a city like Houston. But ok, we are trying, so that they could also go through this ordeal unharmed.

At the end of this post are the first questions I am practicing with them to get prepared for the interview.

Now the Democratic Party

"The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in continuous operation in the United States and one of the oldest parties in the world. The Democratic Party has the most registered voters of any party as of 2004, with 72 million voters." (Wow, impressive)

"The Democratic Party evolved from Anti-Federalist factions that opposed the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton in the early 1790s. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison organized these factions into the Democratic-Republican Party" (So, what is it, Democratic or Republican? I guess in this case it refers to Republican vs Federalist)

Hey... I've heard of those guys... they were part of the 100 citizenship questions...
I've heard of Thomas Jefferson before. No idea who Alexander Hamilton or James Madison were. Only that they did signed the Federalist Papers (that was the question to study for the test)... I guess I really have to find out what those Federalist Papers were... (mmmhhh should I, really?)

Mmm... let's jump to the economic view to kind of compare with what I wrote in my previous post of the Republican Party...

"Historically, the party has favored farmers, laborers, labor unions, and religious and ethnic minorities. (It seems they are mentioning me... ). It has opposed unregulated business and finance, and favored progressive income taxes... In the 1930s, the party began advocating welfare spending programs targeted at the poor." "Today, Democrats advocate more social freedoms, affirmative action, balanced budget, and free enterprise system tempered by government intervention (mixed economy)".

All of this selectively taken from Wikipedia as well.

Mmmhh... what do those terms really mean? Affirmative action? balanced budget?
More to research.

Ok... all of these ideas look nice too...

I have received a couple of answers from candidates... but still a long way to go... not enough data for a decision.

Let's start with the Republican party

According to Wikipedia, the Republican Party "was founded by anti-slavery expansion activists in 1854, it is often called the Grand Old Party or the GOP (Oh... so that's what that means), despite being the younger of the two major parties. The party's platform is generally considered right of center in the U.S. political spectrum." ... "Republicans emphasize the role of free markets and individual achievement as the primary factors behind economic prosperity. To this end, they favor laissez-faire economics, fiscal conservatism, and the promotion of personal responsibility over welfare programs"... "Reaganomics... This theory holds that reduced income tax rates increase GDP growth and thereby generates the same or more revenue for the government from the smaller tax on the extra growth." "They believe private spending is usually more efficient than government spending".

Oh well.. let's think about this for now... too much would get confusing...

First... that data about "founded by anti-slavery expansion" is news to me... good news.
Free markets... promotion of personal responsibility... reduced income tax... sounds good.

Tomorrow I will maybe see more of the Republican ideas, or maybe I will see the ideas of the counterpart for the same issues.

For now, need more information...
